Florenzi implicated in gambling scandal

AC Milan full-back Alessandro Florenzi has been implicated in the same Italian sports betting scandal that has already seen Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli receive lengthy suspensions.

In the investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), it has been found that multiple players have broken the Sporting Code of Conduct by betting on football matches.

Florenzi’s involvement

The AC Milan defender is facing charges similar to that of fellow Italian football Nicolo Zaniolo whose involvement became known far earlier.

The pair initially claimed that they only placed bets on online games rather than football matches, however, they may still face a fine as it is prohibited for footballers to gamble on anything at all.

Additionally, both players could incur an even harsher penalty should they be found to have used illegal sites for online games.

Florenzi is now expected to meet with prosecutors and give his version of the allegations laid before him in Turin over the coming days.

It is thought that Florenzi will follow the lead of Nicolo Zaniolo who has remained steadfast in his claims of only gambling on online poker and blackjack, meaning his actions remain in line with the Sporting Code of Justice.

Italian football scandal

This story comes in lieu of the already far-reaching implications of an Italian betting scandal, not even the first of its kind this year with Brentford striker Ivan Toney receiving a band at the beginning of the season in addition to Fagioli and most recently Tanioli.
