First half of 2024 marks strong growth for Kansas sports betting

Kansas has continued to experience significant growth in its sports betting market, with the total handle reaching $1.2 billion (approximately €1.1 billion) in the first half of 2024, surpassing initial expectations. In June, the handle surged by an impressive 43 percent year-over-year, reaching $140.1 million (approximately €128.7 million).

While there was a slight dip in June’s handle compared to previous months, online betting remained strong, with a 42 percent increase over June 2023. The retail sector also saw positive growth, with a 52 percent rise. June marked a significant milestone as the gross win reached $14.5 million (approximately €13.3 million), representing a remarkable 77 percent jump year-over-year.

DraftKings and FanDuel continued to dominate the market, capturing over three-quarters of all wagers placed in June. However, new contenders such as ESPN BET and BetMGM showed strong performances, tying for the third-largest share, signalling a potential shift in the competitive landscape.

Despite the anticipated summer slowdown in sports betting activity, Kansas is on track for a successful year. With over $1 billion (€919 million) already wagered, the state has exceeded the total handle recorded in the previous year. This positive outlook suggests that Kansas sports betting is poised for continued growth and success in the coming months.

Next best thing in Kansas sports betting

The online sports betting in Kansas was launched in September 2022 with six major sportsbooks, including FanDuel, Caesars, BetMGM, and DraftKings. These sportsbooks offer a variety of betting options and enticing welcome bonuses. FanDuel is known for its user-friendly interface and unique same-game parlay wagers; Caesars provides frequent promotions and competitive odds; BetMGM appeals to users with its strong loyalty programme and competitive betting lines; and DraftKings is recognised for its innovative features such as the stats hub and betting pools. The market is expected to expand further, potentially reaching 12 online sportsbooks. Additionally, some Kansas casinos already offer retail sports betting options.

A newcomer, Fanatics Sportsbook, has also entered the market, taking over from PointsBet. While the app is still under development, it offers interesting features like a loyalty programme rewarding users with bonus bets and merchandise. With six options currently available and more on the way, the Kansas sports betting market is heating up, offering exciting opportunities for sports fans in the state.
