Louisiana sports betting bill makes it through

John Bel Edwards is bringing sports betting in Louisiana to life by officially signing this bill into law

All elements for Louisoans casinos to start the application for licences are now set with John Bel Edwards signing the final pieces of sports betting legislation into law on Tuesday.

Senate President Page Cortez, on Tuesday, said “SB247 fulfills the wishes of the citizens in the 55 parishes that approved the referendum last fall to allow sports wagering and SB142 will help direct funding derived from this activity to early childhood education.”

Louisiana sportd bettingThis bill will set up the main framework for retail and mobile sports betting with the legislation going into effect on July 1st. This bill follows a previous taxation bill that Gov. Edwards had signed into law earlier this month.

20 licences will be available to the state’s riverboat casinos, horse racetracks, and single land-based casinos in New Orleans. Every applicant will be qualified to open a retail sportsbook and have up to two digital platforms.

With this taxation bill, the state lottery is set to open an additional mobile sportsbook as well as retail kiosks at hundreds of bars and restaurants across the state. With the Louisiana lottery green-lighted to have a digital platform, there could be up to 41 mobile apps or sites in the state. Out of 64 parishes, 55 approved this and will therefore have mobile/internet sports betting available.

As the 2021 football season is set to start, this law will allow the 41 mobile operators to enter the state and operate legally. Eligible bettors (over the age of 21) can now place mobile bets with licensed operators without having to complete a registration process.
