Malta emerges as global hub for esports and gaming excellence

In a recent keynote address delivered during SiGMA Europe 2023, Ivan Filletti, CEO of GamingMalta, shed light on Malta’s remarkable journey to becoming a global hub for esports and gaming excellence. Filletti emphasized the island nation’s commitment to embracing the broader spectrum of gaming, including iGaming, video game development, esports, and immersive tech.

Filletti added that Malta, “Silicon Valley of the iGaming industry”, boasts the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) as its regulatory body, while GamingMalta serves as the promotional arm for all gaming efforts within the island, positioning itself as a home for businesses and new technologies rather than just a centre or hub.

We’re not a hub,  we’re a home, because we want businesses and new technologies to feel comfortable working from the island.

Ivan Filletti, CEO, GamingMalta talking about Malta’s role in iGaming

Filletti highlighted the transformative impact of iGaming on Malta’s economy, constituting a substantial 12% of the gross value added. With over 14,000 employees in the sector, Malta has become a thriving hub for the gaming industry since its EU integration in 2004.

Five years ago, recognizing the need to evolve, Malta expanded its gaming portfolio to include iGaming, video game development, esports, and immersive tech. The convergence of technology facilitated collaboration between these verticals, creating a dynamic ecosystem.

Esports, in particular, caught Malta’s attention as a rapidly growing spectator sport. Filletti shared his experience attending large tournaments, emphasizing the immense enthusiasm among younger generations. He drew attention to the staggering numbers in the video gaming industry, surpassing the combined scale of the film and music businesses.

With a strategic vision, Malta aims to contribute 1% of its GDP through gaming by 2030, anticipating the creation of 2,000 to 2,500 jobs in video gaming and esports. Filletti emphasized the importance of understanding the esports ecosystem, citing examples of successful ventures like DHL and major industry acquisitions.

Malta’s commitment to esports is evident in its infrastructure development, including the creation of an incubator space called Basecamp. The island actively collaborates with organizations like ESL,  (a German esports organizer and production company that produces video game competitions worldwide) establishing Malta as a significant player in the global esports scene. The country’s historical context and unique appeal also attract esports teams and players.

Malta has taken strides in building an esports ecosystem, fostering education, and encouraging diverse career paths within the industry. The collaboration with ESL and hosting major tournaments demonstrates Malta’s long-term commitment to becoming a key player in the esports world.

In conclusion, Ivan Filletti’s keynote highlighted Malta’s evolution into a strategic global hub for gaming and esports. With a focus on collaboration, education, and infrastructure development, Malta is positioning itself as a home for the rapidly expanding world of esports and gaming. As the industry continues to grow, Malta’s ambition to be a European island at the forefront of gaming innovation appears well-founded and promising.
