Tal Itzhak Ron of Tal Ron, Drihem & Co, Dan Zuzkeviz of Pay it Easy, John Marsden of iovation and Timothy Zammit from the Malta Police Force, come together to discuss the perils of cybercrime in the digital age.
Moderated by Tal Itzhak, this panel delved into a brief overview of what they as individuals and their company, or organisation, are responsible for, providing insight on the topic and some useful advice along the way. After doing the introductions, Itzhak started out by addressing John Marsden of iovation and asking him about his experience in cybercrime.
Marsden’s experience in cybercrime was one that originally started with working in fraud, but then of course with the turn of the millennium, the whole dynamic of fraud started to shift, and he essentially explains how the company profiles the devices being used for fraud and effectively block out the fraudsters from the client’s infrastructure. Iovation stands out in its work because it works specifically on mapping a global consortium which is then made available to their clients as a reference. This consortium consits of around 72,000,000 fraud reports, all of which help tech departments to understand the hackers and fight against them by building a protective system.
What we also do is to map that into a global consortium; 3600 brands are protected by our products.’
From the international side of things, Itzhak then moved on to the local aspect, turning to Timothy Zammit of the Maltese Police Force, who explained the methods of the police in the country regarding cybercrimes, from tracing people administering specific accounts on social media, which he noted is a considerably resourceful side to cybercrime on the island, to conducting computer forensics on devices and collaborating with teams overseas. He then continued saying how the Police Force puts a lot of resources into conducting educational programs for the public about both prevention and protection from cybercrimes.

The remaining panelist was then next to explain what his company, Pay it Easy, do in Tel Aviv, where essentially Dan Zuzkeviz explained how being a payment company, the goal is to effectively take care of credit card data and keep it in secure and safe place. Zuzkeviz says how by using Latpay Payment Solutions, one can establish security, especially since the source of access is given to one person; the owner of the company. The data that is then transferred is converted into a masked or scrambled form of itself, making it useless data for hackers.
To end the panel then, Itzhak asked the panelists to say what they think people can do to prevent cyber crime in the future. To this, Timothy Zammit of the Police Force, addressing operators and companies said
Please invest in your policies. Policies are in place to protect your data.’
John Marsden approached it from his area of expertise saying how as much as we try to protect ourselves, the best thing is to be mentally equipped with a realistic and direct view saying how people need to make sure to keep in mind that every bit of data out there is liable to be compromised and manipulated and so people have to keep this in mind whenever there is any inputting of data or whenever there is the creation of an on-boarding process.
To conclude, the mic was once again passed on to Dan Zuzkevic who said that there will always be new hackers with new methods ready to challenge the defensive barriers of protection by the police and by private companies, but he said that he still believes in the strength of LPS systems and that he believes it is the way to a secure future.
