China intensifies efforts against illegal online gambling

Ministry of Public Security strengthens fight against illegal online gambling during Covid-19 outbreak

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security urged Chinese nationals to be vigilant towards the increase in online and telecom frauds especially during this lockdown situation.

Authorities continue its crackdown on illegal online gambling and telecom frauds which saw a rise in number, taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Ministry said that they will target all companies engaged in illegal online operations, including those providing customer service, technical support and payment facilitations. They have also reminded that is illegal to participate in any cross-border online gambling activities.

Authorities have warned all nationals to be more attentive and to stay away from cross-border gambling services as these operators are profiting from the locals by taking advantage of the lockdown.

Earlier this year, China strengthens their efforts against illegal online gambling, placing emphasis on illegal cross-border online gambling.

The Ministry of Public Security’s Vice Minister said that they were successful in their crackdown for 2019 and continues to have significant results to date. He also acknowledged that the entire illegal gambling space has not seen fundamental changes processes for settlement of gambling funds continue to evolve.

In 2019, China called out other Southeast Asian nations to ban online gambling and to implement strict measures against illegal operations. This after the authorities observed operations in these countries are targeting Chinese residents thru online gambling sites.

As of January 1, 2020, all online gambling operations were shut down as Cambodia’s reply to China’s request.

On the other hand, the Philippines and Chinese authorities have announced that they are working hand in hand in combatting illegal gambling operations in the country. The statement was released after the Philippines did not implement similar online gambling ban and continues to legally license operators in the country.

In 2019, with coordination with the Chinese government, the Philippines has started deporting Chinese residents found to be illegally working in the gambling industry.
