Eagles win first ever game in Brazil

Jason Kelce, recently retired Philadelphia Eagles legend, was elated to watch his former team kick off the 2024 NFL season with a gritty 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The historic game, played at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, marked the NFL‘s first-ever match in Brazil. While the Eagles’ win was a positive start, Kelce—known for his candid nature—did not shy away from calling out areas of concern.

On social media, Kelce shared his excitement but also highlighted the sloppiness of the game, particularly pointing to first-game jitters on offense and lapses on defence that allowed explosive plays. “When they were executing, man, they are rolling,” he wrote, urging the team to clean up their errors to maintain momentum throughout the season.

This game was especially symbolic for Kelce, who spent 13 years anchoring the Eagles’ offensive line before retiring. His absence was felt early on, as Philadelphia’s offensive line struggled without their veteran leader. In their first drive, a mishandled snap led to a turnover, illustrating the challenge of adjusting to life without the five-time All-Pro centre. Although the Eagles found their footing by the second quarter, the offense took time to settle in, a clear reminder of Kelce’s irreplaceable presence.

However, there were bright spots. Jalen Hurts showed flashes of brilliance, and star running back Saquon Barkley was a difference-maker with over 100 total yards and multiple touchdowns. Kelce’s optimism for the Eagles’ season was evident, despite the rocky start. He emphasised that once they eliminate their mistakes, the team has the potential to be unstoppable.

The game in Brazil was more than just a football match; it marked the NFL’s growing international footprint. With fans tailgating back in Philadelphia and a vibrant crowd in São Paulo, the game had a festive atmosphere, showcasing the global appeal of the sport.

As the Eagles move forward, they will aim to tighten up their play while adjusting to the absence of their iconic leader. If they do, as Kelce put it, they’ll “be rolling, baby!”
