Ex-MGA, MFSA’s Joseph Cuschieri: Self-suspension over Vegas vacation news report

Ex-MGA, MFSA CEO Joe Cuschieri suspended himself after Maltese newspaper released an article about his paid trip to Las Vegas with murder suspect Yorgen Fenech

Ex-MGA chief and current MFSA chief executive officer Joseph Cuschieri as well as general counsel Edwina Licari self-suspend over the alleged trip to Las Vegas with casino mogul Yorgen Fenech, who is currenty being detained on suspicion of plotting the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

At the time of the trip Licari was still in legal counsel, whilst Cuschieri had just resigned from the Malta Gaming Authority about three months prior to the trip, which took place in May 2018.

Pressure mounted on Cuschieri to step down after the news surfaced earlier this week, seeing as allegedly the trip was paid by Fenech. In return to the allegation, Cuschieri informed Times of Malta (who first reported the story) that he was invited by Fenech to act as advisor in his capacity as the former gaming regulator.

At the time of the trip, Fenech’s link to the DCG murder was not yet known, and Cuschieri also insisted that there was no conflict of interest or ethical breach seeing as he had stepped down from the MGA in February 2018.
