Self-exclusion rolled out across Colorado

The Colorado Division of Gaming (DOG) has launched a statewide self-exclusion register to assist individuals coping with the multifaceted effects of gambling addiction.

Aligning with responsible gambling rules in the Centennial State, the register will allow residents to exclude themselves from any and all regulated gambling activities across the state.

This means that excluded individuals will not have access to online sports betting along with being denied the use of casinos or sportsbooks within Colorado.

Self-exclusion specifics

Residents may choose exclusion periods of one, three or five years. Application is available online via email or post as well as providing an in-person method.

Once the exclusion period has lapsed individuals will remain on the exclusionary list until removal is requested by the resident.

The DOG will be responsible for managing the register in accordance with Limited Gaming Rule 29 and Sports Betting Rule 9 in the state’s legislature.

These regulations were initially devised to define responsible gaming duties and requirements for casinos and sports betting operators in the state but may be applicable to regulatory bodies as well.

Course of action

The DOG has already laid plans to create a user-friendly website for self-exclusion in the coming year.

The self-exclusion lists have already been distributed among gambling industry entities and enterprises that are currently operating services in the state in order to enforce the exclusions.

The inauguration of this register will also see the DO take responsibility for self-exclusion in the state, receiving the duty from the Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado (PGCC).

DOG director Christopher Schroder had this to say on the transfer of duties:

“We appreciate all of the work that the PGCC has done to get the Self-Exclusion program to this point. They are an excellent partner in this important work.”

He also expressed excitement at the advancements being made to curb problem gambling in Colorado.
