Southwell Racecourse to return to full operations after flood repairs

Southwell Racecourse in Nottinghamshire, England will resume full operations on August 2, after extensive restoration work due to severe flooding from Storm Babet in October last year. The venue had been operating partially since November 24, 2023. On its social media pages, Southwell Racecourse announced it is now ready to host visitors without any restrictions for the first time since the flood.

Extensive flood damage and restoration

The storm caused damage, submerging parts of the racecourse under up to three feet of water. This required substantial repairs and limited access to many facilities. Despite these challenges, Southwell Racecourse managed to hold 47 meetings, including the £100,000 (€118,526) BetUK Winter Derby on February 24, although with restricted public attendance.

Initially, the repair efforts focused on essential areas like the track, stable yard, and a temporary weighing room to quickly resume racing. This allowed the racecourse to continue operations, albeit at a reduced capacity.

Achievements despite adversity

Approximately 100 people attended the Winter Derby, the track’s first Group race, showcasing the team’s effort to keep the racecourse operational during the repairs. Mark Clayton, Executive Director of Southwell, praised his team’s hard work and expressed gratitude towards the racegoers for their patience. He highlighted the collective efforts in restoring the racecourse to its full capacity, ensuring it could offer a premium experience to visitors once again.

Anticipation for the full reopening

With the refurbishment now complete, Southwell Racecourse is set to celebrate its full reopening with a six-race card on August 2, with gates opening at noon. Additionally, the Southwell Golf Course, which remained open during most of the post-flood period, is nearing the completion of its repair works. The clubhouse closed due to flood damage, is scheduled to reopen on August 10.

The full reopening of Southwell Racecourse not only marks the end of a challenging period but also ushers in a new era of vibrancy.
