Star Entertainment receives licence extension

Star Entertainment Group has received a six-month extension from the Australian state government of Queensland to demonstrate suitability in operating casinos in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The initial 12-month deadline has now been extended until May 31st next year.

This should allow Star ample time to showcase its capabilities in managing the Queen’s Wharf construction and its existing Gold Coast casino.

Emphasis on compliance

Queensland’s Attorney-General, Yvette D’Ath, has approved The Star’s 640-point remediation plan, with the Group’s CEO, Robbie Cooke expressing pleasure at this revelation.

Cooke stated on the matter:

“We’re pleased to have our remediation plan approved in Queensland. It’s an important step on our path to returning to suitability in Queensland and will track and hold us accountable throughout the multi-year program we are committed to delivering.”

He emphasised the importance of returning to sustainability in Queensland.

Failure to demonstrate compliance could lead to a 90-day suspension of the group’s gaming licence in Queensland.

Additionally, non-compliance could also lead to further disciplinary actions such as fines of up to AU$5 million.

Acknowledging Star’s efforts

Evidence of top-down changes within the Group has been acknowledged, however, it has been noted to be very early in the transformation process.

In conjunction with the extension, the appointment of special manager Nicholas Weeks has been extended a full year.

Jessica Mellor’s appointment as the CEO of Star Gold Coast earlier in October was also a significant step in the company’s organisational restructuring with the aim of improving operational accountability across its properties.
