Wynn Al Marjan: a game-changer for UAE’s tourism sector

The much-anticipated Wynn Al Marjan, a $3.9 billion (Dh14.3 billion) resort project, is set to become a “must-see” tourism destination in the UAE. The foundation work is almost complete, and vertical construction is set to begin soon. Craig Billings, CEO of Wynn Resorts, expressed confidence that the resort would be a major attraction in the UAE, contributing to the company’s long-term growth.

The United Arab Emirates, a country deeply rooted in Islamic traditions, has historically prohibited gambling due to religious beliefs. However, the landscape is changing with the upcoming launch of the Wynn Al Marjan in Ras al Khaimah, marking a significant shift in the country’s stance towards gaming and integrated resorts.

Ras al Khaimah: from underdog to tourism powerhouse

Ras Al Khaimah, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates has long been overshadowed by Abu Dhabi and Dubai. However, with the upcoming launch of the Wynn Al Marjan resort, this perception is set to change dramatically.

Historically, Ras al Khaimah has a rich tapestry of ancient civilizations, maritime trade, and Bedouin heritage. Archaeological findings suggest that the region has been inhabited for over 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. Its strategic location at the entrance of the Arabian Gulf has always been crucial to the socio-economic and cultural growth of the emirate.

Ras al Khaimah was previously the location of the important Islamic era settlement and port of Julfar. Over the centuries, Ras Al Khaimah has been influenced by various civilizations including the Persians, Portuguese, and British.

The ultimate in luxury and entertainment

This project is a testament to the UAE’s resilience and adaptability.

The Wynn Al Marjan resort, set to open in early 2027, will house approximately 1,500 rooms, suites, and villas. It will offer a wide range of entertainment options, a gaming area, 24 dining and lounge experiences, innovative spa and wellness experiences, a high-end shopping esplanade, an events centre, a theatre hosting a unique production show, and other amenities. Designed for both longer visits and day trips from neighbouring Emirates, the resort will offer abundant and layered experiences, including nightly laser and light shows making use of the latest technologies.

Billings highlighted the substantial growth opportunity in the UAE that will further diversify their portfolio and expand their brand into new markets. Wynn Resorts announced operating revenues of $1.84 billion for the fourth quarter of 2023, an increase of $835.5 million from $1 billion for the fourth quarter of 2022. Net income attributable to Wynn Resorts was $729.2 million for the fourth quarter of 2023, compared to net income attributable to Wynn Resorts, Limited of $32.4 million for the fourth quarter of 2022.

The launch of Wynn Al Marjan marks a historic moment for the UAE, signalling a shift in its approach towards gaming and integrated resorts. As the country navigates this new landscape, the resort is poised to become a major attraction, contributing to the growth of the tourism industry and diversifying the country’s entertainment offerings.
