Esports team removed for administrative error

Valorant Ascension promotion winner, The Guard, will not participate in the coming Valorant international leagues season in 2024, despite winning the right to do so.

Riot Esports recently crowned its Valorant Champions 2023 winner, Evil Geniuses, which concluded the contest with a 3-1 win over Paper Rex.

Unfortunately, the organiser’s elation was interrupted by the news that The Guard will not be eligible to take their position next year as an administrative error is providing a significant roadblock.

The Guard and Riot’s failings

After The Guard’s successful qualification for the 2024 Valorant Champions Tour (VCT), it was announced that the team had failed to confirm the Team Participation Agreement, missing the deadline for the completion of this task and suffering a removal from the 2024 season.

Prior to the Ascension tournament which provides the winners with qualification, each team was required to sign the agreement in question with their signatures held in escrow until the completion of the tournament.

The onboarding process was then commenced immediately subsequent to the Ascension’s conclusion. The winning teams were then required to release their signatures from escrow to finalise their victory and secure their promotion to the VCT.

However, after 2 months and a lack of response from The Guard, Riot was forced to omit the team from the competition in order to meet scheduling demands.

Fall out

What seems the most jarring to many observers is the fact that Riot’s only action was to omit The Guard, disregarding the team’s players who are now ineligible to compete at any level in the competition.

Aside from this, the organisation also declined to promote any other team leaving the qualification spot vacant for the 2024 season.

Solutions and competition remedies

After news broke of The Guard’s omission, there was much talk about the team’s players being given special dispensation to participate in next year’s competition as free agents integrated into the same team.

Alternatively, the players could also have been authorised to compete with another team.

Both of these ideas were ultimately thrown out by the head of Valorant Esports, Leo Fari, who explained that as the team’s members competed under the name of The Guard, they only qualified under this circumstance and no other, making them categorically ineligible.

There were also calls for The Guard’s North American Ascension runners-up, M80, to be given the vacant league position by default. However, Valorant were not willing to take this step as the organisation explained in a statement:

“The point of Ascension is to reward performance, and as great and talented as M80 is, qualifying a team that didn’t win the tournament defeats that purpose.”
